bitly is a URL shortening service that allows users to truncate links to web pages. bitly was founded in 2008 and is a privately held company headquartered in New York City.
How does bitly shortlinks work?
bitly uses longer URLs and replaces the entire link with a shorter series of numbers and letters. These shortcuts are permanent and cannot be changed once created. URLs shortened using the bitly service use the bit.ly domain. This process is necessary in order to share links via social media, especially Twitter, which has a strict character limit.
bitly has also released new products, including an enhanced platform tool called Bitmarklet, which allows users to save links directly from their browsers, and a service for sharing video links.
